The auction takes place under the large tent at Kaminski Auctions on Saturday and Sunday September 20 and 21, 2008. Bidding commences at 10am on Saturday and at noon on Sunday. Accompanying a wide variety of antiques and collectibles at this two-day auction is an impressive lineup of fine art. Paintings range in origin from Massachusetts to Kaminski’s second location in San Diego, California. Represented artists include Emile Gruppe, Henry Mosler, William Penn Morgan and John Woodrow Wilson.
An important painting by Swiss-born artist Jeremiah Theus, Miss Jacobs (Est. $60,000-$80,000) is expected to garner attention. Theus immigrated to America in 1735 and worked out of Charleston, South Carolina, rising in popularity as a portrait artist for prominent families in the area. He is considered to be the most popular artist of his era in the Charlestown area, and his work is now valued by collectors and historians alike. This circa 1750 painting, housed in an elaborate gilt frame, bears a label from Vose Galleries of Boston.
A Lady at the Easel (Est. $25,000-$35,000), a painting by artist William Penn Morgan, is also offered. Morgan studied painting at the National Academy of Design in 1851 and went on to become a member and featured exhibitor. The painting is signed and is an example of the artist\'s most collected work: a figural subject painted in a Classical Realist style.
Also represented is the sought-after Massachusetts artist Emile Gruppe. Winter in Waterville (Est. $20,000-$30,000) depicts the small Vermont town blanketed in snow, featuring a quaint covered bridge in the foreground. Gruppe, best known for his New England seaside scenes, often spent winters in Vermont, where he derived inspiration for this piece. The painting is signed by Gruppe and measures 25 x 30 inches.
A conte crayon portrait of composer Marc Blitstein (Est. $10,000-$20,000) by John Woodrow Wilson also crosses the block. The piece is signed and dated with an inscription reading “for Florence – whom I should have known long ago – Marc Blitstein Oct 20, 1949.” Wilson’s work shined at Kaminski’s last April, when his lithograph Native Son soared to $5,460, crushing it’s original estimate of $250-$350.
